Following the declaration of Dr.
Olusegun Mimiko as winner of the governorship election held on Saturday
20 October, thousands of jubilant supporters of the governor took to the
streets of Akure in frenzied jubilation on his victory at the polls.
The banner-carrying celebrants who thronged the streets in several groups, walked several kilometers right from the Alagbaka-location of INEC office to Adesida, NEPA, Oyemukun, Arakale and several other roads in the city sang joyfully in appreciation of governor Mimiko’s achievements in the state.
The wild jubilation resulted in heavy and sustained hold up on the popular and busy Oba Adesida Road and others, with many motorists also responding to the melodious songs rendered by the celebrants.
“Iroko, you are a man of honour. All have heard it in the world, you will be the governor for eight years. When they were tearing down posters, they did not know that they were tearing away themselves from the state,” they sang in Yoruba language.
One of the celebrants, Adeolu Adebayo who spoke to P.M. News, said he was happy and pleased with the victory of Mimiko because of his performance in the last three and half years he has been working as governor of Ondo state.
“The man has really worked hard to transform the state. He deserves to rule us twice. If only there were a third term in governance, we would have given him. So, why would we not be happy and celebrate a man of many achievement,” he said.
Security operatives were everywhere on the streets to forestall a breakdown of law and order.
